Puhoi – Passing Through

Puhoi Sunday Market dayWe were moving north from Wenderholm Regional Park and we had to almost go past Puhoi and it was the last Sunday of the month and that meant Puhoi Farmers Market. So what were we to do? Well… we detoured the couple of kms off SH1 to see Puhoi again. We’d last been there in the winter of 2009. It didn’t look to have changed much, which is good. It looks like a nice little settlement.

The market was in full swing when we arrived at about 10am. Puhoi is a popular drive destination from Auckland, being only a few kilometers beyond the current northern motorway end. One thing though, I’m not sure why it’s called a farmers market. We were expecting some farm produce, hopefully some market garden produce. But there was very little. There were craft stalls. And plant stalls. And wooden furniture stalls. Maybe this is a market for farmers? That might explain it.

There was a good little band called Otherwise Fine playing some fine fiddle country sort of music. They were fun. And we had a wander around the rest of the town. It looked like every third motor vehicle was a big motorbike. They all roll up to the Puhoi Hotel for Sunday lunch or brunch or whatever motorbike groups call it. And it looked like every second car was an German. They all roll up to the Puhoi Hotel for Sunday lunch or brunch or whatever they call it.

Detail on Puhoi Church. I imagine it might be a bit delicate invoking two patron saints. What if they each find out that they’re not the only one?
