A Magical Day at Momerangi Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound

Momerangi Bay, Queen Charlotte SoundWhen we finished working at Nelson a week ago we had a couple of days before we were due to start more working in Picton. We were keen for somewhere relaxing and Momerangi Bay on the road around Queen Charlotte Sound was somewhere good for that. So we headed there as soon as we finished. It was dark when we parked up and settled down.

The next day was sunny and calm, just what we’d hope for.

It was warm enough to get the skin out and make some Vitamin D. It looks like a lot of my body doesn’t see a lot of sun. Maybe I’d make a good beacon in the night?

Eventually I had to put my book down and go for a walk over to the wharf. A couple of hundred metres. It’s not a big bay.

Then it was time for lunch. And later another walk – towards the other end of Momerangi Bay. This was maybe three hundred metres. It’s not a big bay.

Momerangi Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound. It was a few moments before we realised the lump on the back of the boat was a seal, sunning itself.

So that was it for the day. We’d relaxed. We’d walked – twice. All there was left to do was read our books in the sun some more.

Or not quite all. At the end of the day we walked back to the wharf to see the sun setting. There was a disturbance on the water, and we realised it was the seal, swimming towards us. They are so graceful in the water. Liquid. It was swimming back down the Sound. Going somewhere. We saw that there were actually two seals, both going somewhere, together. They swam under us on the wharf, and soon disappeared around the point. It was one of those moments you remember.
