The Little Falls That Could – Mt Somers

Sharplin Falls Mt SomersWe headed on north, through Geraldine and on up SH72. This parallels SH1 in a zig-zag sort of way. We stopped at Mt Somers, a small town overlooked by Mt Somers, and parked up at the Domain camp. With the weather predicted to get cold and white, we made the most of the remaining daylight with a walk to Sharplin Falls. Mt Somers has a variety of walks, and the Sharplin Falls is one of the shorter ones.

It is a good track, up the stream for a start. A man at the carpark told us to watch out for some native trout in a pool in the stream. I think  native trout are actually galaxiids, migratory or otherwise.  It seems they are not very common and it was a thrill to see them in their natural habitat.

From there the track climbs away steeply, with lots of steps, before finally sidling back to a side-stream and the Sharplin Falls. These are not the biggest or boldest waterfalls in the country but are well-worth the walk.

Back towards the carpark the day was getting gloomy but there was still enough light left to photograph the stream from the bridge.

  1. Oops, tried to send a message, but lost it in cyberspace.

We love reading your very descriptive blog about your travels. And those wonderful photos – obviously a very talented photograher in the family.

New Zealand is such a beautiful country – we are all so lucky to live here, and have our homes on wheels so we can get out and explore.

Hi Robin and Jenny; thanks for your kind comments. You are right, we are all lucky to live in this country. We’ve been exploring NZ for 5 years now and haven’t anywhere near run out of new places to discover.
