Off the Island – Monday 9 March

We actually set the alarm, and it woke us at 6:20am. It had bucketed down in the night, but cleared to another nice morning. A friend of Wyn’s called round for a cup of tea before work, and then we set to work packing up. We pulled out at 9:25am, and headed north. It was cool with no wind – perfect for travelling.  And the traffic was light going north – another bonus. We stopped at Cheviot at 11am for coffee and scones outside in the sun. After Kaikoura Wyn drove to Blenheim. We ended up stopping outside the Montana wine place, and ended up going in for a bit of a taste – well Wyn did most of the tasting. We fueled up at the Blenheim BP truckstop, and zoomed on to Picton, which took a bit less than 5 hours driving time.

We had a late lunch/ early tea of baked beans on ciabatta buns,  and got everything ship-shape. Then it was round to the BlueBridge ferry teminal before 6pm. Once we got through the queue, it was straight on, with the car on the A-frame. But inside they decided we’d need to unhitch to turn – which only took a couple of minutes. Being truckies we tend to get on board sooner, and found a nice corner with a couch and a power point. Wyn curled up on the couch with a couple of pillows and her book, and I sat at the desk with the laptop and started catching up on the blog. There was a bit of a swell once we got out into the strait – maybe I shouldn’t have sat on the computer all the time. I was feeling a bit the worse for wear by the time we arrived in Wellington, and the fresh air was welcome. We drove off just after 11pm, and madfe a beeline for the Te Papa carpark. This was not quite as easy as before, theoretically we needed three carparks! We paid for one to 6am, and were soon asleep.
