Photo of the Day #1 (Chaweng Beach 1977)

Chaweng Beach, Ko Samui, Thailand

Maybe I’ll try a Photo of the Day series. This should last me for the next couple of centuries 🙂 Anyway, today’s photo is an oldie, from 1976 – or was it 1977? It’s the only one I’ve got (I think) of Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui, an island off the east coast of Thailand. This was on a visit while traveling with my sister Julia.

We heard about Koh Samui along the way – it hadn’t even made it into the first edition of South East Asia on a Shoestring that was our guide. We stayed at the only accommodation on Chaweng Beach, First Bungalows – there were maybe 6 bungalows, and a roofed restaurant. The photo is scanned from a transparency taken on my new Pentax ME, back in the olden days of real film and SLRs.

The morning I took the photo I’d have had the beach to myself. Wyn and I revisited Chaweng Beach last year on our travels in South East Asia. I’ll have to find a new photo to show the difference. Meanwhile, back in 1977 …

In 1976/77 the owner of the bungalows was a Swiss? I was there at that time too. There was no airport and only a dirt road to the bungalows. We were taken there by car from the harbor.

Please Ross, write to me what you remember. Greetings P.Fish

Hi Peter. Sorry about the delay in seeing your comment. My memories are very vague from that time. Grass huts. Tin shed with four poles and no walls for the kitchen/dining. Serving the 4? bungalows. More of a dirt track the last part to the beach. The beach was usually deserted. You can imagine my surprise revisiting about 35 years later and seeing the new First Bungalows. Maybe it’s not so good to go back to places so long after? Cheers, Ross
