From Gulf Harbour we moved on a little way north, through Orewa and over the hill to Waiwera and Wenderholm Regional Park. We’ve been here a few times before and we’ve always liked the location and the peacefulness. Wenderholm was the first of the Regional Parks. It has a beach and an estuary through which the Puhio River flows. There is a lovely old villa homestead and many wonderful big Pohutukawa trees. There are several short walks so no excuses on the exercise front.
We’d gotten a bit bogged down in the Orewa shops, so by the time we’d gotten set up in the camping area we only had time for a quick walk in the gathering gloom. The camping area is a good 5 minutes walk from the beach, beside the estuary and the mangroves. They are busy creating a newer and bigger camping area, even further from the beach.
I was up early next morning hoping to see the sun rise. Which sort of happened.
Later in the day we went for a walk with a view. We came back via the estuary in time to see the sun setting up the river.
