Luckily we arranged for a few days off over Christmas when we took on the motel minding job at Christchurch. The job turned out to be fairly frantic, what with having to run a shuttle van to the airport and most guests only staying one night and being mostly foreign tourists. And a quarter of the guests arriving after we went to bed and another quarter leaving before we got up.
It was lovely to get the time off for a quick zoom south for Christmas with family in Dunedin and Hawea. Dunedin was wet and cold but that didn’t matter. It was catch-up time and that was good. Hawea was drier and warmer.
We were on the road for three of our five days off but that didn’t matter. It was lovely to get two nights in Dunedin and two in Hawea. All too soon though it was time to return to the motel world in Christchurch.
We plunged back into the whirlpool of airport shuttle runs and tourists and Christchurch. Having a few days off gave us time to regroup and relax. But all too soon Christmas was a memory.
