Up Mangere Mountain

What is it with mountains? With rivers, islands and most geographical features the name comes first i.e. Cook River, Cook Islands, Cook Strait etc. But with mountains, the ‘Mt’ bit comes first i.e. Mt Cook. Why isn’t it Cook Mountain? Who decided these things? Was there a committee? You probably hadn’t thought about this so I’m worrying about it for you. In the middle of Mangere suburb is Mangere Mountain. Not Mt Mangere but Mangere Mountain. It sounds bigger and more significant, with some mystery and mana. It has craters and fortifications. To Mangere Bridge

Wednesday was a 29th of February, that 4-yearly rarity. We only wanted to move home – not far, sort of just across the Manukau Harbour. Except nothing in Auckland is that simple. We (alright I) spent too much morning mucking around and by the time we’d visited the nearby dump station the afternoon was well advanced and rush-hour traffic was upon us. The plan was to travel separately, Wyn in the car following close behind me in Suzi truck. I had Nev the Navman with his 2007 maps and his fixation with motorways. Nev is oblivious to 5 years of rapid motorway development in Auckland – which makes navigation a lot more exciting. Continue reading

Exploring Auckland Part 2

Monday 27 February was Chill-Out-in-Henderson Day for us. Tuesday we launched ourselves at Waiheke Island. I’d been there overnight about 15 years ago and Wyn hadn’t. We figured a day’s exploring was in order. We caught the train in from Henderson and just had enough time to make the 10am ferry from downtown. So had everyone else – it was a popular ferry. The boat zooms along – fast enough to create a bit of windchill and thin out the tourist numbers outside. It only took about 40 minutes to the island, and the bay we arrived in was sunny and calm. Exploring Auckland

Friday 24 February we were still at Ambury Farm Park at Mangere Bridge in Auckland. We went for a drive to Manukau, among other things to get a city map from the AA that covered Manukau. We needed something to balance our car GPS (Nev the Nav)which was running on 2007 maps! We discovered subsequently that the map we got from the AA was 2009! 3-year old maps of Auckland are not helpful given the changes since then with motorways especially. It rained a lot that day and we visited a big mall in Manukau and eventually found our way safely home to Ambury Park. Continue reading

Ambury Amblings

Tuesday last week we met up at the nice Countdown car park near the Auckland airport. (Being homeless we appreciate things like thoughtful car parks.) And then spent a while working out where we might go for the night. (Being homeless we often devote time to contemplating where we’ll sleep that night.) And settled on Ambury Farm Park – one of the Auckland Regional Council’s many regional parks. Ambury Park is close to the airport, and is nicely located close to the Manukau Harbour. Booking in by phone resulted in us getting a year pass and vowing to use more of the parks over the autumn and winter. Continue reading

Beach Bach Birthday

Back in Pukekohe on that Wednesday we went to visit Traillite – Suzi’s builders. Suzi motorhome needs a few things sorted and fixed and we needed to get an idea of when and what. With that done we retreated to the big car park down Manukau Road to regroup. We headed out later in the day in search of the local AA office to get some Auckland maps. This was en exercise in frustration because by the time we found out where it was, it’d closed at 5pm. It seems many Pukekohe shops close at 5pm although those still open to 5.30pm didn’t know why. Funny sort of concept! Defeated, we retreated to the Cosmopolitan Club and our park for the night way down the back. Continue reading

Coast to Coast – Taranaki to Auckland

By Tuesday the weather had reverted to being more typical of the North Island summer – or lack of it. It was raining. This day was Valentine’s Day and Wyn’s birthday and the day we were going to Auckland. So we were up early and away by 9am. We spotted a popular cafe in Mokau and stopped off for morning coffee. Then headed on to Awakino and inland to Te Kuiti. We intended to try to find the Shell truck fuel stop but stumbled onto the BP one first so filled up there. Continue reading

New Plymouth Ho!

Monday was a lovely day in New Plymouth. With a lovely view from our parking spot overlooking Fitzroy Beach. Eventually we got our bikes sorted and going and got ourselves sorted and going. We headed down a track to the beach-side cycle and walking track and turned right and biked north. The “track” is amazing – all concrete and 2-3 metres wide. And not too straight or level. Very well designed and made. Before long we reached the river where the track had ended last time we came this way a few years ago – 2009 to be precise. No problems this time. Continue reading

North to New Plymouth

Saturday dawned fine in Marton. It also dawned on us that we had no plan for the day or where we were going from there. Not surprisingly we ended up staying and enjoying the day. Later in the afternoon we went for a walk to visit friends of Wyn’s who live in a lovely old home with many rooms each of which is bigger than our entire (mobile) home. Yesterday morning they came round to visit us in our (mobile) home. I took advantage of a tap to give Suzi a long-overdue wash. Continue reading

Moving on to Marton

Friday was a nice-enough sort of morning at our carpark in Petone. I met a nice man from Australia who’d spent the last three years seeing the South Island and was about to start on the North one. When you think about it, he’s spent more time than most of us South Islanders seeing the South! We sorted ourselves out and headed back onto the motorway to go south a little before interchanging and heading up the dreaded Hill of Death (aka Ngauranga Gorge). It’s a steep climb for sure. The trick is to know which lane to be in at which stage as low-speed lane changing in a lumbering truck amongst high-speed cars feels a bit like a game of skittles. Continue reading

Changing Islands

Sunday was a day for catching up on some of the administration. And no walk. Later on we moved over to the motels and parked up and moved in. Monday morning we took over for three days. Monday was Waitangi Day so was more like a Sunday and a bit quieter. Then it got busier as the week went on. Tuesday the coffee machine blew up (or out) and so we had to turn off the water to the dishwasher. We missed both. Continue reading

Unto the Wither Hills

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.” Psalms 121.1. I had to memorise that in Standard 4 Sunday School. I never forgot it – I learned it well. So well that when the S4 boys were made to stand up and recite the Psalm in unison, it became a solo after the second verse. How the other boys must have hated me! In hindsight I might have gained more friends by learning less. Continue reading

Blogging Without Pictures

Now I have an excuse for being long-winded. I know all that stuff about a picture speaking a thousand words. It is a bit of a generalisation as it does tend to dismiss poetry in general and ignores the genius of Shakespeare in particular.  Anyway, I digress…. Continue reading

Ever Eastward – Farewell Spit to Blenheim

We woke up on Wednesday near Farewell Spit to mist and rain and time to go back. Back from Golden Bay to the real world. We stopped off in Takaka to do a few things. And Takaka looked even further from the real world than usual. There was a big festival starting up on Takaka Hill and Takaka had become the waiting room for all the young hippies – the Koru Lounge for the festival trip. Yeah man. Continue reading

Glorious Golden Bay

Friday of last week we headed out from Richmond, bound for Over the Hill – to Takaka and Golden Bay. It had been a few years since we’d been to Motueka and longer since we’d been Over the Hill. The first surprise was the Mapua bypass. Mapua and Ruby Bay and more besides are now all bypassed, for better or for worse. The road zooms through the hills, and so did we. And on to the Takaka Hill. I’d forgotten the details and we’ve tackled lots of interesting hills and roads with Suzi towing the car. But the Takaka Hill remains right up there with the best/worst. Right from the bottom it is steep and winding. And it goes on like that forever, or so it seems. Continue reading
