Meanwhile, back in November we were enjoying a short break at Kenepuru Sound in the Marlborough Sounds. We had one more day to enjoy the quiet and the bird songs and the peace and calm. And a nice day it was too. We were parked at the DoC camp at Cowshed Bay just before Portage. Portage is a hotel/resort and a few houses and a shop and a wharf. Cowshed Bay is a lovely little bay with flat parking and camping areas in the bush. It is a lovely bay with a less-than-lovely name.
It was a good morning for a few photos of the water. We started talking to another camper there who was fishing. It turned out he was from Opoho in Dunedin which is where we were from as well. So we were doing the Small World thing when we discovered that the woman with him was someone I know from my Port Chalmers days. Sometimes it is a very small world.
While we were standing around chatting someone spotted a large jellyfish out in the bay and waded out and herded in into shore with a stick. I’d seen some smaller ones earlier but this was a big blob. Pink and red and white. Very strange creature.
We were planning a walk in the afternoon but decided we wanted a coffee at the hotel first. So we walked the few hundred metres around to Portage. This time the detached cafe was closed so we enjoyed our coffees on the sun terrace of the hotel. It is a wonderful location and would be a lovely place to hang out for a while. Nothing much to do but enjoy the peace and quiet and relax.
