First day of work on the orchard

Today was our first day of work since our travels began. We started jobs on an orchard at Earnscleugh that dries apricots.  Hot Saturday got as hot as 32 degrees, so we got ourselves over to Brighton Beach and had a swim in the sea – that’s been a while since our last swim in the sea at Dunedin. Sunday was sorting ourselves out, retrieving some things from storage. We were late getting away – more like 4pm. We discovered that the whippy radio aerial on the luton is whipping itself against the luton, making quite a noise of itself. Continue reading →

Melting at Mosgiel

Wow! It’s a hot and windy day here at Wingatui, near Mosgiel, near Dunedin. It was warm enough last night. And today at 2pm it’s 31 degrees inside and 31 degrees outside. It was blimmin’ hot for gardening yesterday, including carrying 1.3m of mulch in and spreading it on the garden – as we slowly melted. However, it got the job done and looks good, and if any weeds dare show their little heads …. Today has been catching up with friends and trying to keep cool. And trying to finish my library book so it can go back. And avoiding the pile of paperwork. It looks like summer has definitely arrived in Dunedin.

Leonard Cohen sang to me

Monday 19th was a catchup and sort out day. We were flying out the next day to Wellington for the Leonard Cohen concert. We needed a few things out of storage, like the printer!  First we moved Suzi to a more sheltered spot, and had a tidy up. Then it was into Dunedin, which seemed a lot busier than Waikaia!  We got a quick-release contact installed on the battery, so now we can easily disconnect the battery when we are towing the car and avoid flattening it. And went through the pile of stuff we have in storage and under the house – still too much! Then it was back to Wingatui and home/Suzi, to get packed up. I had lots of tickets and vouchers to print off for the plane, the hotel, and the concert. And we even had time to catch up with Colin and Molly again. We set about three alarms – I was starting to get excited about going to Wellington to see/hear the real Leonard Cohen 🙂 Continue reading →

Slacking around in (Northern) Southland

Dolomore Park Scenic Reserve is a gem. We intended to just spend the night there, but this soon changed. There were walking tracks all over the place, so on Wednesday we decided to spend the day, and do some walking. There was a Whisky Creek Loop Track, which was supposed to take 2 hours and get us back to where we started, with a 45 minute side trip climb to a lookout. It was a lovely warm day and well past midday before we started. And about 5 hours before we finished – but we were in no hurry. There was lots of lovely native bush, and a great view south, and a little waterfall. It was only our second walk after Kurow Hill, so we were happy just to be out and about. We even wandered back into the bush after dark to check out the glow-worms. Continue reading →

The lost weeks … pt 3 Mooching up the Waitaki

As per usual, we slept in at Awamoko, and all our neighbours had left by the time we emerged. I was preoccupied with how to start the car with the flat battery. And with keeping the house batteries charged up. And keen to try out the generator now that we had no neighbours. So I fired up the generator, and was busy charging the batteries. While making breakfast, I zapped my cereal in the microwave, but this proved too much for something. The load went on the generator, then it stopped. My heart sank and I started to look to see what I’d blown. Continue reading →

The lost weeks … pt 2 Starting up the Waitaki

Sunday January 4th took a while to get going – we were late out of the camp and I got told off 🙁  We finally got out by mid-day, and set up in the car park at the top of the Gardens by the Alambra Ground. We did a few errands, had lunch – late as usual, and I checked out a guy with a radio-controlled model glider. If anyone was wondering what to get me for next Christmas, one of these would be fun 🙂 Continue reading →

The lost weeks … pt 1 Cromwell and Whare Flat

Right then, sorry to have gotten behind on this. I’ll have to do better, maybe that should have been one of my New  Year Resolutions?

From Earnscleugh we headed up to Pisa Moorings past Cromwell on 23 December, and parked on an empty section across the road from my sisters. Continue reading →

Alive and well and relaxed

Oh boy – how time flies when you’re not doing much.

So, we are all still alive and well, and relaxed. We’re currently overlooking the Wanaka basin on a lovely warm sunny afternoon. It looked like a calm day up the lake today and there were parking spaces in town. I guess everybody had gone out on the water or to the water or in the water. Unless they were packing up to go home after three weeks of wind. We’re up on a terrace above the Mt Barker Road – a zillion dollar view. Wyn is off mini-golfing with her son and grand-daughter. My two children are lazing about., reading and game-boying.  And I’m running out of excuses for not updating this blog.

A Little touch of Paradise

Hi its Wyn here for a change, to give you my view of the day. We ‘slept in’ a little today until 8.00am.  Apparently most of the Motorhomers start the day in a very leisurely fashion so we must be getting into it. Mind you, our lovely viscose elastic mattress is definitely the most comfortable I have ever slept on. Continue reading →

On the Road Again

Friday turned out to be a busy day of Christmas shopping and sorting things out, still more of trying to fit stuff into the Suzi.  Then Saturday started with a bit more of the same. But lots more actual preparation to leave. There were lots of people we never got to see, just not enough time.  The first job of the day was to load up with water , 400 litres takes quite a while through a garden hose! Then it was off to see the Isuzu people to see what they could do for our cab doors that don’t quite close up at the top. They managed to get them working better, which is good. Wyn with the Toyota) and I met up at the dump station – not the most romantic rendezvous. Continue reading →

Days in Dunedin Doing Things

It was strange for us returning to Dunedin earlier in the week, with our new status of No Fixed Abode. We set up in the Leith Valley Holiday Park – it’s handy to our storage locker and things we need.

We’ve enjoyed a few days catching up with family and friends, and trying to sort out our stuff. There was a pile of mail for almost three weeks. And boxes and boxes of stuff we’d set aside for loading into Suzi when we returned. We’ve realised it is just all too much, so there’s been a lot of thinking about what we’re really going to need, and when. We thought we’d reduced so well, but now realise more ruthless reduction is required.

We’ll be here all today – Friday – and now plan to get away to Central Otago tomorrow. Probably the general holiday rush to there starts today, but we’ve still got to get sorted here.

Suzi goes south

We did manage a bit of a walk by the lovely lake – Moana-nui? Then it was back on the road, heading south. We needed to find a Post Shop, so stopped in Taupo. We topped up our road user charges as we were about to run out, and sent off our application to the NZMCA to use their mail drop service. Then with a bit of browsing in the shops, it was nearly mid-day by the time we hit the highway again. The 25 kmph corners south around the lake were interesting, especially for SH1. Heading south

It didn’t take long for Super Signs to finish the decals. And then that was it – all finished in Pukekohe. So we headed out of town – across to Bombay, and onto SH1 heading south.  Yahoo.  We’ve got to like Pukekohe, but it’d been two weeks since we arrived, and time to get going. Continue reading →

Pukekohe starting to seem like home…

Yesterday was decal day, sort of. We started with Traillite, sorting things out. Their service and attitude has been brilliant. The battery meter caused the most head scratching, and in the end got replaced. We met Smillie and Grant of ROAMNZ motorhome – she is another keen forum user. It is good to put faces to names, and both of them had some good tips on all sorts of things. Continue reading →

Photos at last

I’ve finally managed to upload a couple of pictures. If you check the tabs above, there’s one called Travel Pics, and one called Suzi Pics. If you click on any of the photos you can see them bigger, and you can flick from one to the next if you wish. Next thing I’ll have to get them into the writing as well…
