Impressed by Shanghai
So here we are then. Tuckered out in Shanghai. 6.30pm and 28 degrees with humidity of 88 %. Steamy is what it is. We have been here for a couple of days and have had a good go seeing some … Continue reading
Just One More Sleep Then Off to China
After Staveley and the sausage rolls, we stayed for a couple of days at Methven. We went for a drive to find Lake Coleridge. For a large lake it proved surprisingly elusive. Sufficiently elusive for us to admit we didn’t … Continue reading
Sausage Rolls at Staveley
Steveley is just up the road from Mt Somers. There’s a cute cafe there so when we moved on from the Mt Somers Domain we stopped off on the way past. I was keen to try the sausage rolls which … Continue reading
A Stroll Up Mt Sunday aka Edoras
It snowed at the Mt Somers Domain camping ground the morning after our walk to Sharplin Falls. Not a lot. Not a blizzard. No drifts. Not even inches deep. But it did snow snow flakes. We were quite excited.

The Little Falls That Could – Mt Somers
We headed on north, through Geraldine and on up SH72. This parallels SH1 in a zig-zag sort of way. We stopped at Mt Somers, a small town overlooked by Mt Somers, and parked up at the Domain camp. With the … Continue reading
Obscure Lake Opuha
From Tekapo we crossed Burkes Pass and dropped down to Fairlie – inland in South Canterbury. There we turned right and headed up the valley we’d just come down; on the other side. About 10km up is Lake Opuha. A … Continue reading
To the Top at Tekapo
After our visit to Mt Cook it was time to be moving on. The weather forecast was a bit uncertain with mention of snow so we figured on getting further north, east, and lower – in that order. We headed … Continue reading

Coming Closer To Mt Cook
After a couple of days of looking up Lake Pukaki towards Mt Cook it occurred to us that we could go visit the mountain. So Saturday last weekend we did. We went for a drive up the Tasman Valley, after … Continue reading
Light and Shadow – One Day at Lake Pukaki
Friday of last week we were parked up at Lake Pukaki. It is an extraordinary landscape. And waterscape? Mt Cook and the other biggies up the lake. The Ben Ohau Range across the lake. Assorted hills off to the east. … Continue reading
To Lake Pukaki – via Lindis Pass
We finally left Hawea Flat last Thursday and headed north towards the Mackenzie Country. We were thinking Lake Pukaki would be a good place to park up on the way. And so it proved to be. One of the best.

Of Sun and Stars – Hawea Flat
Tuesday last week was a lovely sunrise morning. And the night before that was a wonderful clear starry night. I had a try at photographing the stars and was pleasantly surprised by the results.
Wonderful Wintery Wanaka Waterfront
Monday afternoon last week we spent a some time in Wanaka. I had a couple of hours for supermarket shopping and wandering along the lakefront taking photos. It was a wonderful day after a frosty start. Calm and clear.
Up the River – Matukituki Valley
Last Sunday was a day for an adventure. The forecast was for a fine clear (and cold day) and it didn’t disappoint. We headed up the Matukituki Valley. Parts of the valley the sun doesn’t even reach at this time … Continue reading
Around The Block – Hawea Flat
Saturday was a good day. The sun shone and it was warm enough. I went off to Wanaka networking and Wyn tackled some washing. There was a keen wind off the lakes but it calmed down on dusk. The lovely … Continue reading
When is a Creek Not a Creek – Lake Hawea
After a bit of relaxing at Hawea Flat, we headed out last Friday for an explore around Lake Hawea. We had a drive around the township and found a picnic area down by the lake for lunch. A cool wind … Continue reading
