A Tale of Two Sillies

GPS pictureThis is a cautionary tale about relying on GPS navigation for anything much more than amusement. We’ve heard all the stories of dumb drivers who end up on wilderness roads with the guidance of their GPS navigation system. Up the Rainbow Road towards the Molesworth. Over Haast Pass instead of the Lindis. Over miles of gravel road taking a “shortcut” Continue reading

A Room With a View – Picton

Interislander ferry leaving PictonOur latest motel managing gig was in Picton. The motels had a wonderful view over the marina and Picton Harbour and our room was no different. We got to enjoy watching the ferries come and go and all the other boats as well. We had a few seasons over the five days we were there. Continue reading

Destination Davies Bay

Queen Charlotte TrackWhile we were lazing at Momerangi Bay on Queen Charlotte Sound last week, we thought some exercise would be good. Nothing too strenuous. Just a nice walk on the first part of that end of the Queen Charlotte Track. To Davies Bay from Anakiwa. Davies Bay was directly across the Sound from where we were parked up. Continue reading

A Magical Moment at Momerangi Bay

Momerangi BayThe previous day had been a lovely one, lazing around at Momerangi Bay on Queen Charlotte Sound. Watching the seals swim under us on the wharf was a something special that we thought would take some beating. But then next morning… Continue reading

A Magical Day at Momerangi Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound

Momerangi Bay, Queen Charlotte SoundWhen we finished working at Nelson a week ago we had a couple of days before we were due to start more working in Picton. We were keen for somewhere relaxing and Momerangi Bay on the road around Queen Charlotte Sound was somewhere good for that. Continue reading

Around and About at Tahunanui – Nelson

Tahunanui, NelsonWhen we finished working at Porirua we flew back to Blenheim and picked up Suzi motorhome and headed over to Nelson. We had problems with our vacuum toilet; mainly it didn’t work. It had been a problem before we went to Porirua, and there had already been a go at fixing it. Semi-successfully. Continue reading

Passing Through Picton

Picton Ferry TerminalEn route from Momerangi Bay on the Queen Charlotte Sound to Blenheim it is hard not to stop at the lookout over Picton. This is at the end/beginning of the Queen Charlotte Drive – a road of many corners. Which climbs over the last ridge to reveal a panoramic view of Picton. Here the fun is to stop and watch the bustle of the place. Continue reading

Momerangi Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound – Part 2

Momerangi Bay, Queen Charlotte SoundWe weren’t quite finished with Momerangi Bay. Or it wasn’t finished with us. There was a lovely last morning to have to ultimately drag ourselves away from. Water, forest, sun, remote – a happy combination. Continue reading

Momerangi Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound – Part 1

Momerangi BayFrom Nelson, we inched our way closer to Blenheim and work. We were enjoying our little bit of summer and were keen for all the sun and relaxation we could find. We were keen for some seaside sun and settled on Momerangi Bay. Being on Queen Charlotte Sound it is technically seaside, but without the surf and drama Continue reading

Round About Ruby Bay – Nelson

Suzi motorhome at Ruby BayFrom Lake Rotoiti we headed for Nelson. Specifically to Mapua and the Mapua Leisure Park and a fitting funeral service for a former park owner and adventurer. For both of us it was a place of memories where we’d both camped many years ago. F Block is still F Block but it’s a different place when there’s hardly anyone else there. Continue reading

Beginning of the Buller – Lake Rotoiti

Lake RotoitiEach time we have been to St Anaud/ Lake Rotoiti we have been surprised to see that that is where the Buller River starts. The Buller River is the lake outlet. So any journey from Westport to St Anaud en route to Blenheim is a journey up the full length of the Buller River. Sea to lake outlet. It may be something they could make a bit more of. Continue reading

Murchison in the Middle

Skyline Walkway MurchisonUp the Buller River from Westport, past Hawks Crag, past Inungahua Junction (and its Earthquake Museum), the Buller River runs past the small town of Murchison. It is small as towns go, but the biggest town for a long way round. It’s sort of in the middle of things. Continue reading

Charmed By The Charming Creek Walkway

Charming CreekWe’d heard a bit about the Charming Creek Walk. We had some time to spare. The sun was shining. This was the day. We dug out our walking poles and we headed up the coast from Westport. After a stop for lunch at the Waimangaroa Cemetery, we drove on to Granity and Ngakawau Continue reading
