Even longer time and no post ….Andrew’s accident …

Wow! It’s been a long long time. And no good. A blog with no posts is exactly like a pub with no beer.

It was fairly busy back then at the end of August. We were on the path…

4 September and I resigned from my job – that was a big day.

6 September and I finally got the campervan on Trademe – that was a big step ….

6 September and we figured it’d been a while since we’d had a night in the camper, so we loaded up the fridge and headed down the coast, and set up at our favourite spot south of Brighton.  Backed up onto our headland, sea on three sides.  Took a few photos with the last of the light.  Put the kettle on. Beautiful evening, life is great.

Then the phone went and life changed…. Continue reading →

On the Trail of the Holy Grail – the ideal motorhome design

We have just about finalised the design of our new motorhome – which is just as well since construction has started. Building a new motorhome (personally or by a builder) can be fun, challenging, stressful, and downright scary.  I can see that buying something off the shelf or off the yard can be an attractive option. Mostly everything is decided and done, so it’s then just a case of living with it. Easy peasey ….

But not for us. Or for many others. We had ideas. Constraints. Must-haves. Wants. We bought an ex-rental campervan, as a bit of a trial horse. We learnt lots. We added stuff to it, like solar power. We developed a smaller table. We talked about what we’d change if we were to live in it for long periods of time. We worked out what worked well, and what didn’t.  We started looking at second-hand motorhomes, with an eye to finding something to live full-time in.  This became like ‘Goldilocks and the Two Bears’- the other story where stuff is either too big or too small, and nothing is just right. Fairly quickly we came to the conclusion that to get something just right we were going to have to start from scratch and build something – or more precisely get something built. Continue reading →

Bus for Sale Nissan UA440 11.3 m 1993 Ready for Conversion

The bus that was going to be our new home is definitely for sale. It’s on Trademe, listed under Motorhomes. Have a look at this link – no longer working.

It is listed as ready for motorhome conversion, and includes a photo of an earlier conversion of the same sort of bus.

It’s all complied and registered, so there’s no worries about new emission and brake rules.

A Day in Day Surgery

Yesterday was a different sort of day – in day surgery. And what a great day it was…

I’ve been plagued by an old knee injury from my running days up to 2000. I thought giving up running had seen it mend, and I had quite a few years of mountain biking and walking and tramping. But a couple of crashes on the Naseby 12-hour relay last year, a big ride round the Waitati circuit late last year, and finally orienteering in February completely stuffed it. After a long round of physio GP, GPSI (GP with Special Interest), MRI scan, GP again, and finally Orthopaedic Surgeon, it all looked a lot like the old injury, and I learned that knee internals don’t really fix themselves. Heaven knows how I got those intervening years out of it. But it was deemd that it needed a “bit of a tidy-up” which sounded nicely low-key. The surgeon had a slot that was only three weeks away and I wanted it done.

Long time … no blog …

Crikey! Is that the date? Where did the rest of July get to?

Life is fairly busy. There was a burst of TradeMe in there somewhere. Sold a few things. Couriered my first stuff out of town. One got smashed – my old bakelite radio. That’s sad 🙁 And one buyer refused to go through with the sale because the mixer wouldn’t make sausages. Heck, it is a cake mixer that doesn’t claim to make sausages. Sometimes Trademe seems like a lot of work.

And there was a trip to Auckland for a birthday. Just in time for their horrible storm last weekend. Jeez it was wndy all right. Mind you it didn’t dampen the birthday party.

And we went down to Pukekohe to see the motorhome people down there. That was fun, looking at the different designs with each one different. The rain started there on Tuesday, and followed us home that night. It stopped down South by Saturday morning.

Thursday we started night classes again. This term it is Photoshop. This is something I’ve always wanted to get the hang of – very exciting.

Yesterday we checked out mattresses. With 1000mm from the base to the ceiling in the luton, every mm of mattress height is a mm less of headroom in a cab-over. And for full-time living a good mattress means mms. There’s no such thing as a free mm in motorhoming, that’s for sure. We’ve started wondering about viscose-elastic mattresses. Great comfort and compact heightwise. Trouble is the cost. A Tempur one costs as much as a good car. And it is probably a love-it or hate-it sort of thing.

Today has been storage locker compacting day. We managed to get two lockers into one, so that’s a good morning’s work. There is so much to get rid of, it is a bit daunting sometimes. It is good to do it together, we can encourage each other, chanting “reduce … reduce.. reduce…” or lately “less … less…. less” courtesy of Susan Jeffers.

The Forum is Back

Hallelujah…. The CMCA/NZMCA on-line forum is back on line for us from NZ.

After a numbe of months when the link was broken, there is now a new link and it works. And I am happy…

The link is in the members-only part of the NZMCA website. There is a generic login to get you to the forum. There you can browse the forum to your heart’s content. If you want to post or reply you need to register.

There is a huge wealth of information and knowledge within the forum. I’ve spent an hour this morning trolling through the threads on generators. You get all sorts of opinions, and can form your own conclusions. I have found this hour more useful than months of searching and asking around. It will change what we specify for our new motorhome, and probably save some mistakes. Priceless….

The Warehouse and the Inconvenient Truth

I used to love the Warehouse.  I remember the good old days when it was exciting to hang out there.  you never knew what sort of bargain was going to get announced over the PA. They were the place for everyone to get a bargain, and get something we could afford. They were cheap, and they did good customer service – they had to because a proportion had to go back because it didn’t work.

But that has changed, certainly down our way. I went into the Dunedin store yesterday and I don’t remember what it was for. The reason I don’t remember was that when I got there after work, I decided I’d start with a quick trip to their toilets.  But when I got there, I was greeted with a sign that said they were locked and I had to go to Customer Service to get a key and I should be grateful because this meant they’d be nicer toilets.  Yeah right….! iPhone on sale in 2 Hours

Wyn got an email advertising the new iPhone, and ended up watching a video explaining the features. Wow! Never mind the outrageous cost in NZ and that it isn’t available in pre-pay. Is it a cool thing or what? It is just so thin and sexy. It is difficult to conceive of the range of applications. Without even starting to figure if we could use them, it’s not hard to want one. At my rate of adopting new technology, having acquired my first iPod about a month ago, I should be ready for one about March 2010. They will be cheaper then, and on pre-pay, and we’ll have a 3G network good enough for motorhoming. If we could do a Back to the Future thing and take an iPhone back to 1988, what would they make of one? Would someone in 1988 believe that devices like that will be on sale in 2008 in twenty years time?

And we get them first in NZ don’t we? I’m not sure what this proves, but somewhere there are people queuing up to be the first in the world. Good on them.

Recycling the Old Transperancies

I made a start yesterday on scanning some of my favourite old slides (transperancies). My Epson RX510 multifunction came with a slide and film negative scanner. I haven’t used it much, and it was a bit of a mission to get the drivers for it – the disc got lost somewhere.

The wonderful thing is you just put the slides in the holder, tell it they are transperancies, hit Scan, and it whirs away, finally spitting four .jpg files into the folder of my choice. It is a miracle if you ask me.

The main trouble is that my old slides are growing furr and spots at an alarming rate. And gathering dust. They are all 25-35 years old, so I suppose that might have something to do with it. And they have been stored in all sorts of places which might not have helped.

My aim is to scan as many as I can, and at least get them digital. Then I can set to with PhotoShop and see how much I can fix them up. That’s the exciting thing about getting them digital. It’ll stop the rot and also get them a bit more compact and transportable. Hopefully it’ll keep me busy on Winter nights in future. Hopefully a good motorhome pastime?

Uploading pictures

You’d be proud of me Michael. I managed to upload some photos and get them onto a new page/gallery.  And even get a couple of them onto posts.  It only took about 37 attempts 🙂

I tried uploading them first thing this morning – no luck. Maybe it was because I was doing it as Wyn? So then I tried as myself, and no problem.  Figuring out how to get them onto the posts was a mission because I was looking for ID numbers for them.  Once I figured there was a button in the editor it was simpler.   This is going to be fun 🙂 🙂

Gloomy Sunday

It’s Day 2 of the Motor Home Page blog thing. I’m still in the learning and configuring stage.  Well more set-up really. Me and configure are not often in the same sentence 🙂

It’s a gloomy sort of day in Dunedin, but it’s stopped raining which is good. Out the window ahead of me I can see lots of snow still on Mt Cargill and Flagstaff. The open parts of the Moon Track on Swampy looks plastered. Yet the tussock on the top of Flagstaff looks clearer. It looks like Dunedin missed the best (worst?) of it, again!

One thing I’d like to know, and I think we need a high-level inquiry into this; does it snow more on Friday and Saturday nights in Dunedin? Or is it just my incomplete memory? Not living in a high suburb, I dream of hearing on the radio on a Monday morning that there is snow 15cm deep all over town, and the word is to stay home and not try to travel anywhere.  But what are the chances? Have we heard that more on a weekend morning in recent times?

Today’s tasks include populating the gallery a bit, transferring some of my old blog stuff from the last couple of months, vacuuming and maybe making an upside-down pudding for lunch.  Is it wrong to make pudding for lunch?

My first WordPress blog post

Wow! This is my first actual post to this new blog. So far so good. My wonderful technical adviser and son Michael has smoothed the install process – well done it all actually. Now I just need to figure how to work it all. This is quite exciting. I’ll make this a short post, but don’t think this will set the tone lengthwise.

AA Motorhome Plus

We came across an annoying condition of the AA Motorhome Plus benefit the other day. AA Motorhome plus is what you need to get AA roadside assistance if you have a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes or something like that. And not just roadside assistance, but it helps generally if you break down away from home with towing and accommodation and travel if necessary.

There is an AA Plus scheme for car drivers, and interestingly it covers the member for any car that they happen to be driving. This gives benefits like towing and accommodation and travel etc. All good and useful stuff. The AA Plus has a weight limit, which means that us motorhomers need the AA Motorhome Plus. So we got that as an insurance for our North Island odyssey over Christmas. So far so good. Except that it was listed as my benefit, and not Wyn’s. And interestingly it is only for the nominated motorhome. This was OK, we only had the one motorhome, and our trip was together, as are 98% of our trips. But recently Wyn contemplated a trip by herself, and one factor was that she mightn’t be covered by the AA Motorhome Plus. We are joint AA members, where she is the main member and I’m the Associate Member (of 30 years). So we couldn’t see what the problem was with us both being covered by the Motorhome Plus.

New TV

Have you noticed how all the TVs are going in for shiny black plastic screen surrounds. “Piano black” they cal it. Ugh. Might not be too distracting in a blacked out room with no light source. But anywhere else? It looks like it is going to reflect every bit of light going. And in a motorhome? Any reflection is going to distract the eye and may be quite annoying. It wouldn’t be so bad but they’re all doing it. They have such lovely non-reflective screens on the LCDs these days. But those surrounds….

Anyway, having seen what is going on, it seemed like a good time to buy a 26″ Sony while we still could. It also looks like Sony may not have a 26″ LCD in their new line-up. And with a Sony home theatre system, we kind of need a Sony for maximum compatibility and minimum remote double-up.
