Photo of the Day #17 (SE Asia Day 7 – Koh Samui)

Lemai Beach, Koh Samui, ThailandTravels in South East Asia August-September 2011. Koh Samui had certainly changed a lot since 1977 when I first visited. But we could hardly believe our luck when we landed on a lovely laid-back end of a fairly busy Lemai Beach. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #16 (SE Asia Day 6 – Koh Samui)

Lemai Beach Koh SamuiTravels in South East Asia August-September 2011. Lemai Beach on Koh Samui (island) in Thailand was a lovely place to wake up. We were at the quiet end of the beach and that was busy enough for us. Later in the morning we ventured north along the beach, towards the busier parts. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #15 (SE Asia Day 5 – Koh Samui)

Koh SamuiDay 4 of our travels last year ended with a mini-bus hurtle from Penang north to the Thailand border, a bizarre border town where we temporarily lost a passenger and found an elephant in the main street, and eventually a transfer to a bigger bus to continue north. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #14 (SE Asia Day 4 – Penang Hill)

Temple detail Penang HillContinuing my trip down memory alley, Day 4 of our South East Asia travels last year began on Penang Island and ended hurtling north in Thailand – on a big bus with a loud video playing. We’d been in Georgetown (biggest city on Penang) long enough to have a favourite place for breakfast. Continue reading

Once More Into the Sounds

Elaine BayTuesday was get-out-of-Dodge-City day – we left Blenheim for “the Sounds”. The Marlborough Sounds. Pelorous sound to be specific. With a stop for lunch at Pelorous Bridge, we eventually wound our way into Okiwi Bay and then over another hill to Elaine Bay. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #13 (SE Asia Day 3 – Penang)

Georgetown templeThe third day of our travels last year was the first day we woke and went to bed in the same place. We got off to a flying start but hoped to spend at least a couple of nights in most places. The plan was to spend more days in fewer places. It was hot and muggy and having come from the depths of NZs winter, we were zapped. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #12 (Snowcaving on the Old Man)

Ross in snowcaveMost winters the Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club organises a snowcaving trip to the Old Man Range in Central Otago. A snowcave is a hole (cave) dug into a snow bank to sleep in. It’s an important thing to learn about as a snowcave can be an important survival tool in an emergency. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #11 (SE Asia Day 2 Penang)

Georgetown streetDay 2 of our travels in South East Asia last year dawned in Butterworth after an overnight train trip north from Kuala Lumpur. A short ferry ride later we were on Penang Island and navigating through the streets of Georgetown to find somewhere to stay. Continue reading

On the Road Again

We’ve just finished another lot of working. 14 days straight at the motels in Blenheim. My daughter Laura and her boyfriend Charlie came to visit for the first part, and that was lovely. The sun came to visit for the second part, and that was warm. It was 30 degrees Sunday, then 27 degrees Monday and Tuesday. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #10 (Esquilant Bivy)

Esquilant BivyWhen is a hut not a hut? When it’s a bivy. Boom boom! Back in the old days many mountain huts were small. It was a long way up there for one thing. They probably had to carry everything up. Or drop them from small aircraft and pick up the pieces. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #9 (SE Asia Day 1 – Kuala Lumpur)

Kuala Lumpur Apartment BlockThese warm days in Blenheim remind us a bit of our travels last year in South East Asia. Except the humidity was a whole lot higher. And the sights were a whole lot different. It’s fun to go back through our photos and see what catches my eye a year on. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #8 (Super Sunset New Plymouth)

Sunset New PlymouthWyn and I were talking this morning about that Dunedin sunrise and how maybe it was the best we have seen. Wyn remembers ringing me to alert me to it. And then we got to talking about what might have been the best sunset we have seen. One sunset that sprang to mind we saw back in March 2009 over the New Plymouth Harbour. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #7 (Another Dunedin Dawn)

Sunrise from Port ChalmersAs I mentioned in Photo of the Day #6, Dunedin does delightful dawns. This was another of those mornings. 31st of May 2007 to be precise. It started off lovely, and developed into spectacular. And then it kept on going. Different phases and colours. I was supposed to be going to work but this really was one not to be missed. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #4a (Green Hut Revisited)

Green Hut, SilverpeaksThere was some doubt about my first picture of Green Hut in Photo of the Day #4 (Green Hut). Sister Wendy thought the chimney was on the other end. In denial, I suggested maybe the chimney got repositioned in the later stages of the decomposing hut. Wendy also wasn’t sure that it was her in the photo. Continue reading

Photo of the Day #6 (Dunedin Dawn)

Sunrise over Port ChalmersBlenheim blue skys are lovely, don’t get me wrong. But there’s something about Dunedin clouds. Especially at dawn and dusk. Fabulous sunrises and sunsets. And none better than those looking down the harbour. Dunedin’s West Harbour suburbs used to be shunned – too far from the city centre at 5-15 minutes! Continue reading
